Historical Background
Miss Josephine Adelia Brown (d. 1951 Aug 23) was a life-long resident of Keyport, New Jersey. She was the daughter of Cornelius H. and Emeline Frances Strong Brown. Her brother, Benjamin F. S. Brown, was the publisher of the Keyport Weekly and the Matawan Journal. Her niece, Miss Mabel J. Brown, took over the operation of these newspapers after Benjamin Brown's death.
Miss Brown taught in the public schools in Keyport and later was a librarian for the Keyport Free Public Library. A genealogist and local historian, she was a member of the Monmouth County Historical Association. Miss Brown was a charter member and first president of the Keyport Literary Club.
Description of the Collection
The Josephine A. Brown Collection consists of materials related to the history of Keyport and the early families from that area. Topics include deeds, the Civil War, genealogy, steamboats, churches, and cemeteries.
