DESCRIPTION OF COLLECTION
These are the records of the Van Schoick and Dunn and their successor's pottery business in Matawan, New Jeresy. These 42 volumes detail various aspects of this stoneware pottery.
The types of records include inventories, cashbooks, account books, bank books, and check books. Through these records, the cussession of owners are represented, and the development and growth of the pottery reflected.
The early history of the pottery is unclear. Some sources indicate that Josiah Van Schoick operated the pottery from 1802 until his death in 1831. Operations continued through his descendants and in 1852 Josiah Van Schoick and Ezra Dunn established a pottery under the name of Van Schoick and Dunn. In 1859, William Dunlop became a partner, and the company's name was changed to Dunn, Dunlop and Company. Still later, the company changed its name again, this time to Dunlop and Lisk.
Provenance: The Van Schoick and Dunn Pottery records came to the Historical Association through William and Agnes Holton of Hammonton, New Jersey. They were obtained by Mrs. Holton's father, Walter Blondek, in 1848 when he purchased the contents of the then closed pottery. The contents included furniture and pottery and the manuscripts. The furniture and pottery were donated to various historical organizations including the New Jersey Historical Society, and Mrs. Holton kept the manuscripts.
