INTRODUCTION
Georgianna Souther Barrows (dates unknown), of Fryeburg, Maine was an instructor at the Freehold Young Ladies' Seminary, Freehold, N.J. She is listed in the school catalogs as Georgianna Souther, an English teacher for the years 1845 to 1847, and for 1852 to 1853. Her brother, Thomas (dates unknown), was principal of the Freehold Academy in 1848.
The reason Miss Souther left the Seminary is unknown, but she was married to Mr. Barrows by 1855. It is possible that her marriage is the reason she returned to Fryeburg, ME.
DESCRIPTION OF THE COLLECTION
The Georgianna Souther Barrows Papers consists primarily of correspondence between Mrs. Barrows and the former Seminary teachers and pupils. Of note, are the letters from Amos Richardson (1823-1881), who was the principal of the school from 1845 to 1881.
The collection contains other miscellaneous material including a paper gift card signed by twenty Freehold Young Ladies'' Seminary students to Georgianna Souther as an enclosure to the students gift that's autographed on verso, "with my gold pencil, Freehold, Oct. 1846", copies of a student newspaper, Our Portfolio (V. 1, Nos. 1-7, 1845), a handwritten copy of a musical program held in 1852 at the Seminary, class rosters listing assignments and essays completed, a circular advertising, "The Richardson Memorial, 1881," a short play entitled, "Dialog", and a newspaper clipping describing a 4th of July celebration held in Freehold, N.J..
The bulk of material dates from 1847 to 1876. No items have been removed from the collection. (Please see Appendix A for a calendar of the correspondence.)
The Georgianna Souther Barrows Papers may be useful to researchers of the history of women's education in Monmouth County and in New Jersey.
Other manuscript materials housed in the Library of the Monmouth County Historical Association that pertain to the history of education include the Freehold Young Ladies' Seminary Collection, the Perrine Papers, and the Schureman-Hendrickson Papers of the Louise Hartshorne Collection. Relevant photographs in the Monmouth County Historical Association Library will be found in the Photograph File under the heading "Freehold Young Ladies' Seminary."
