Preface
This listing of the MCHA's Monmouth County newspapers is an update of the 1976 publication of Stellhorn and Wright's Directory of New Jersey Newspapers 1765-1970. It follows this publication's layout and, except in a few cases, uses its date spans and name changes.
The newspapers are grouped by town and within the town, alphabetically by newspaper title. (The appendix lists the newspaper titles alphabetically, with references to the town of publication.) An index to the newspapers is noted, when one is known to exist. Newspapers and serials published by schools and organizations are filed within the school or organization's manuscript collection and are noted in those collections' finding aids.
The date spans held by the MCHA are noted as being in either microfilm [mf] or hard copy [hc]. Hard copies of newspapers may not be photocopied.
The following symbols are used to denote frequency of publication:
d daily
w weekly
bw biweekly
trw triweekly
m monthly
q quarterly
irr irregular
